The Wodaabe People in Guinea

I’m actually crying, looking at these pictures right now.

Crying, because in the top photo, I can see my mother’s face so clearly in this woman. This woman, who lives thousands of miles away and whom I may never see in my life. But she and my mother share nearly the exact face. The eyes, the nose, the angle of her chin.

All we know of my great great grandfather is that he came off of a boat, and that it took a long time for him to get here. He never told us where he came from. We don’t even know if the name that he has was actually his.

And so, seeing this picture, it makes me think. Is this where my people come from?

Day 18- If you could spend the holiday any place in the entire world, with whomever you wanted, where would you be and who would you be with?

If I could spend Christmas in any location, it would have to be in a Western European country, mostly because of the winter snow and I have a feeling that the Christmas over there would be more genuine because it wouldn’t be as tinged with commercialism, although it exists everywhere. I would also be with my family, because who else would be better to spend the holidays with?
